Yandi Argia Wibowo, President Director of PT Mesa Global Energi (MESA) and an alumnus of Geological Engineering at Universitas Trisakti (2002), was invited as a guest speaker at the seminar “Geologist Career: Beyond the Field”, hosted by his alma mater.

The seminar explored the expanding landscape of career paths available to geology graduates — far beyond traditional fieldwork. Speaking to an audience of students, lecturers, and aspiring professionals, Yandi shared his own journey, from early roles in mud logging and pressure engineering to strategic positions in coal mining, energy trading, and finally, his leadership role in the downstream fuel industry.

“Geology is not just about rocks and drilling,” Yandi emphasized. “It’s about understanding the energy landscape, capital structures, economic models, and how to bring resources to the market.”

He highlighted the importance of energy economics for geologists who wish to enter the corporate or entrepreneurial side of the energy sector. Key challenges such as high capital requirements, risk exposure, regulatory complexity, and long-term financial modeling were discussed in detail — using industrial fuel supply chains as a case study.

Key Points Shared During the Seminar:

  • Energy Sovereignty Matters: Can Indonesia rely on domestic energy instead of imports? The next generation of geologists must be part of the solution.

  • Economic Literacy is Essential: Understanding IRR, payback periods, investment feasibility, and regulatory risk is as crucial as field competence.

  • Industrial Fuel Sector Insight: Yandi presented an actual downstream fuel project with a Rp 12,98 billion investment model, showing real-world budgeting and operational planning.

  • Professional Values: Integrity, dedication, teamwork, quality, and continuous improvement were emphasized as core values that guide success beyond technical skills.

As CEO of MESA, Yandi’s presence demonstrated how geology can lead to leadership, impact, and nation-building — inspiring students to explore careers that intersect science, energy, and business.
